My Drumming Journey

Beat Keepers feature

Some highlights of my drumming journey…

My musical journey began when I started school band in 5th grade. My first choice was drums, but I ended up on saxophone. I finally got to switch to drums in the 9th grade, I knew immediately I had found my calling.  I felt I fit in somewhere, and found my calling.  The process of learning drums and being able to measure my progress and growth was vital in gaining self confidence and growing as a person.

Playing drums is guaranteed to cheer me up when I am feeling down, and a reminder to myself that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.

Drumming has become such a huge part of who I am, and has been a dependable constant on my life’s journey.

My Experience

I have been playing drums for 25 years, and starting learning in school band, where I played in numerous settings, including-

Marching Band, Drumline, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Orchestra

I played drums all though my high school and college education, with a focus on gaining proper technique and a deep understanding of music theory. I was also part of a traveling drumline, River City Groove, for 5 years. We preformed at parades and Sporting events throughout the Midwest.

However, the area I really shine as a drummer and have the most experience is being a rock drummer for touring and recording bands. I started my first punk band at 17, and since then I have always been involved in multiple projects at a time. I have played live with over 27 projects and am a dependable fill in and for last minute gigs. My performance experience outside of school includes multiple punk and rock bands, blues, metal, thrash, dance pop, and of course lots of rock n roll!

I grew up in Sioux City, IA and most of my early experience was playing local shows, and then branching out to tour around the Midwest. In 2009 I moved to Los Angeles, CA. This is where I started to tour the West Coast, and then full North American tours, Europe and Japan! I have also been a part of many recordings.

Along with drumming, I preformed and recorded on guitar, bass, and sax. I am a well rounded musician with a deep understanding of rhythm. I am also honored to play drums for the solo project of one of my personal favorite drummers, Dale Crover (legendary drummer of Melvins, and also Nirvana and Altamont!)
